A 3-Step Guide To Choosing The Best Hair Fall Shampoo

While it’s completely normal to shed hair (around 50-100 strands a day), noticing more hair than usual on your hair brush or down the shower drain can be an incredibly disheartening experience.

I know this first hand: In my early 30s, I was diagnosed with alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder that resulted in irregular hair loss. As someone who experienced thinning hair since her teenage years, you can imagine my devastation at suddenly finding clumps of hair falling off my head.

I searched high and low for the best hair fall shampoo that could give me the lasting results I longed for. Here are 3 steps to follow when it comes to choosing the right product to tackle your hair loss.

Step 1: Look for natural ingredients

The best hair products are full of natural ingredients that promote and enhance healthy growth, but are gentle on the skin. While some synthetic ingredients can be beneficial for hair growth, try to look for as many natural ingredients as possible.

Hair Loss Product

For instance, our Han Rituals Scalp Care Shampoo is a lab-tested formulation of Chinese herbs made up of 98% natural ingredients - the other 2% consists of incredibly effective yet safe synthetic ingredients for extra hair and scalp support.

Natural ingredients in hair care products are also more sustainable for the environment - no more rinsing down harmful chemicals down the drain and potentially causing damage to wildlife.

Step 2: AVOID these hair fall shampoos

If your shampoo lathers a little too easily, chances are it contains sulphate.

Sulphates help to strip dirt and product residue from the scalp, which is why a lot of shampoos on the market contain the ingredient. However, they make for pretty harsh cleansers.

Your scalp and hair needs some of its natural moisture to stay healthy, and if you’re experiencing hair loss and thinning hair, sulphates could make your problems even worse - it can strip away the natural oils, causing dry hair, weak follicles and an irritated scalp.

You would also want to avoid heavy-weight ‘thickening’ shampoos - overuse can weigh your hair down and cause the scalp’s pores to clog.

Step 3: Do everything you can to improve blood flow

When it comes to maintaining a healthy head of hair, circulation is key! This goes beyond choosing which anti hair fall shampoo to use.

As someone who worked in a multinational beauty company for over two decades, it’s interesting to note that while ancient Chinese rituals have long touted the importance of blood circulation and scalp care when it comes to healthy hair, this is a fairly recent point of interest for Western hair care brands.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners pay close attention to the health of the blood, both amount and circulation. Treatments for hair loss in TCM begin with creating harmony in the body by strengthening the blood, balancing hormones and directing blood flow to the scalp.

Here are some routines to adopt that can help improve blood circulation to your head:

  • Daily head massages: Take the time to massage your head when you shampoo and to brush the scalp 100 times daily. This will help stimulate hair follicle cells and encourage hair growth.
  • Look into your diet: Great hair starts with good nutrition. A balanced diet rich in proteins, fruit and vegetables and nuts alongside sufficient water intake is essential to healthy skin and hair.
  • Move your body: Exercising decreases stress on the liver and increases blood flow to the entire body. Don’t forget to rest adequately, too.
